What type of feeding schedule should I put my 11 month old on?

My son turnes 11 months on the 27th. I get WIC and they told me he needs to be eating anywhere from 3-5 times a day. My doctor hasn't even been talking to me about how his diet should be. I'm a first time mom but it seems like all my nieces were eating at the table really young. Right now he eats 6oz every three hours until 8pm. at 8 we feed him a jar of baby food and another 6 oz an hour or two later before bed. Honestly to me it doesnt sound very healthy but thats all WIC is giving us and they say thats all he needs. we only get enough babyfood from them to give him one a day. He seems healthy and happy but I just feel he should be eating more solids and less formula. How should I feed him since he's going to be a year soon and then he gets milk. he has teeth and knows how to use them very well. He doesn't like sippy cups at all though.
