What was the reason behind Clottey's defensive strategy in the Pacquiao-Clottey match?

I think that Clottey went in there very prepared first of all but Manny Pacquiao is is just too fast for anybody right now. The reason why Clottey kept his hands up is one because thats always been his style of fight, second because Pacquiao was just too fast for him and third because since Pacquiao was throwing so many punches, Clottey thought that at some point during the fight, Pacquiao might get tired and he would get to work on him but that didnt happen at all..
